Diepsloot Holiday Programme 5 to 7 July 2016

In celebration of YOUTH DAY this month in South Africa, many news channels and talk show hosts have reflected on the YOUTH and EDUCATION. Our Diepsloot project touches on both these issues and we therefore kick off by inviting all of you to participate and/or contribute to the holiday programme that we will be hosting in Diepsloot in the first week of July.

St Peter’s Continues to REACH OUT in Diepsloot every Tuesday during term time, but now we will be running a 3 day holiday programme in July which will enable many more teachers and therapists from both government and private schools to get involved!

As many of you are aware Read For Africa has been involved in the training of teachers and volunteers as part of St Peter’s Outreach Programme at Diepsloot Combined School for the last 3½ years.

This year, Read For Africa has worked very closely with the Grade 2 teachers at the school as well as the St Peter’s interns to focus on developing the literacy skills of 180 Grade 2 learners. There are 60 children in a class. Whilst every effort is made in a challenging environment to reach each child in a 1-hour literacy session each week, there are some children who are just not able to access these basic skills and need more personalised attention.

 

• Read For Africa is therefore running a Holiday Sports and Buddy Reader Programme for 45 Grade 2 learners in the school holidays for 3 consecutive days from Tuesday 5th July to Thursday 7th July 2016; from 8:30am to 1:30pm daily. With the help of volunteers, the staff at the school as well as the relevant interns at St Peter’s school, we would like to work with 15 children from each class who have been identified as requiring “remedial” attention and would benefit from one-to-one or small group attention to try and close some of these gaps before the new term.  
• The total costing for the resources required to run the programme is R12 284.00. This works out to less that R280 per child. To put this into perspective, a private one hour reading therapy lesson usually costs R300 per child and this programme will provide each child with a minimum of 6 hours of intensive reading therapy in a small group setting as well as all the other fun activities and a basic daily meal and snacks.
• As children cannot focus on reading activities only for a full morning; arts, crafts, games and sporting activities will also be offered during this time.
• There would only be 15 children in a group for arts and crafts, games and sporting activities, but as little as 5 children (or less) in a group for the reading and spelling activities. 
• The more volunteers that we get, the more personalised attention we will be able to give.
• PLEASE consider contributing to this great initiative– either by VOLUNTEERING or by providing some of the required items in the "WISH LIST" which can be downloaded at the end of this section below. Any items can be delivered to Bryanston on a Monday or Thursday or bought with to the programme if you're able to assist even if only for one day.  
• All cash donations can be made to the St Peter’s Foundation and a tax certificate can be issued.
• Please forward the attached proposal to anyone who you feel would be in a position to contribute.
• We will provide on-site Phono-Graphix Buddy Reader training for anyone who is interested in volunteering who has not attended one of our workshops before.
  
  

We would like work with small groups of kids during this period to give them a boost before the new term.

If you are a teacher at one of our member schools, please share the dates with any new teachers or colleagues who have not attended the course. Member schools have special arrangements with Read For Africa and attend these courses at no charge or at subsidised rates. Anyone who has attended this course previously is welcome to attend the course again as a refresher.

If you missed the second half of the course previously or you attended a 1 day course at your school, you are welcome to attend a scheduled ½ day course at no charge.

PsychAssess runs a small meeting group for professionals.  

Many of you know Melanie Smith who is one of our Phono-Graphix trainers. She is a psychometrist who runs meetings on a monthly basis for health professionals. Many of the topics are applicable to parents, teachers and other professionals. The meetings are also accredited with the Health Professions Council South Africa.  

The meetings usually run from 9am to 11am, one Tuesday a month in Bordeaux.

Read For Africa has had the pleasure of working wth

Kunoa Consulting and Nhlanhla Khumalo recently.

Nhlanhla started working with Read for Africa in 2009 as a volunteer at our WITS ABET PROGRAMME when she was a student majoring in Psychology.

She has now started her own consulting company in the area of Literacy and contracted Read For Africa to assist her with her latest project in Rural KZN.

Nhlanhla is working with the Adopt-A-School Foundation on an exciting project building libraries, training teachers, and implementing Phono-Graphix in 3 Rural KZN schools between Newcastle, Vryheid and Utrecht.

Our recent road trip to these areas was a great success and we will be visiting again soon.

Read For Africa recently implemented its Whole School Approach to teaching reading at Summit College

• 25 teachers were trained and 18 teachers have also registered for the internship so that they too can be certified Independent Phono-Graphix reading therapists.
• Thank you to Marietjie Lind, Lyndsay Bell and Ann Alexander who were trained last year and have been using the programme at the school. Their enthusiasm and the progress seen in their learners motivated the school to take on the Whole School Approach. Thank you to Cheryl Naidoo and Michelle van Rensburg for their efforts in co-ordinating the implementation of the training at their school. 

Look at what Marietjie Lind has been up to each time she introduces her class to a

new sound. These pictures fit in perfectly with our new chart when working in the

Purple Level of the programme.  

Linda Cloarec introduced Phono-Graphix to Lake Farm in Port Elizabeth a year ago and is on her way back this July.

Linda and Gina Abroms are English teachers at the French School who are trained in Phono-Graphix and they will be going down to PE again this July to work with a group of very enthusiastic adults with intellectual disabilities.

But before they leave they’ve also signed up to volunteer at our Diepsloot Holiday programme together with their colleagues Katherine and Charmaine! Thank you for your enthusiasm and support since being introdcued to Diepsloot almost 1 year ago to date!

We look forward to seeing Katherine and Charmaine as well as a few other English

teachers from the French School in action this holiday in Diepsloot.

Read For Africa launched READ FOR AFRICA ONLINE over a year ago. You can pay R150 to become a member and access extra worksheets, articles and video clips.

Current interns are automatically members.
